Louisburg College will offer grants and scholarships to new students from counties affected by Hurricane Matthew.
The two-year residential college in Franklin County announced Monday its “Helping Hurricane Grants” to new enrolling students who are from federal disaster areas in Eastern North Carolina. Grants will be equal to or greater than the cost of a room at a Louisburg dorm ($3,000) for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 11. Scholarships are also available.
Louisburg College President Mark La Branche said the housing grant could help community college students whose homes were damaged by the storm.
Louisburg’s sports team mascot is the Hurricanes – a name chosen after Hurricane Hazel swept through the campus in 1954.

College students in 45 counties eligible for federal disaster assistance could receive the grants. Application fees will also be waived. For more information, call 800-775-0208 or 919-496-2521.
