School leaders have a few options for the name of a new elementary school in southern Wake County.
The school, set to open in 2020 on the eastern side of Fuquay-Varina, could become Parkway Elementary, Black Creek Elementary or South Lakes Elementary.
Members of the Wake County school board’s facilities committee said Wednesday they favored Black Creek Elementary but would be open to the other names.
Fuquay-Varina leaders will also weigh in with their opinion, and the Wake County commissioners will make the final decision.
“I think it’s wise for us to wait for the town,” said Bill Fletcher, chairman of the facilities committee.
Parkway Elementary refers to the main road leading to the school. The site is located near Black Creek and a large development known as South Lakes.
Fuquay-Varina is considering naming a planned park nearby after South Lakes.
The name Old Honeycutt Road Elementary was also proposed because the school will be on the northern side of the road. But several committee members said it could be confusing since other schools are on similarly named roads, like Buckhorn Creek Elementary, which is being built on Honeycutt Road in Holly Springs.
