The 26 semifinalists for the Wake County school system’s 2016-17 Teacher of the Year award were announced Monday.
The elementary school semifinalists are Ashley Byars of Oak Grove, Kathy Hopkins of Aversboro, Melissa Jankowski of Highcroft, Leigh Ann Massengill of Fuquay-Varina, Laura Murphy of Yates Mill, Brittany Packer of Smith, Gretchen Ross of Wiley, Megan Shank of Sycamore Creek, Lynda Smith of Wakefield, Tanya Swanson of Richland Creek, Jennifer Tymkin of Hunter and Kim Zeugner of Kingswood.
The middle school semifinalists are Kelly Fink of East Wake, Jesse Gore of Dillard Drive, Lauren Haynie of East Cary, Timothy Kohring of Rolesville and Matthew Lanner of Fuquay-Varina,
The high school semifinalists are Anthony Fitzpatrick of Enloe, Lauren Genesky of Millbrook, Nichole Gibbs of Knightdale, Stuart Gordon of Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy, Mark Mash of Leesville Road, Miles Macleod of Heritage, Susan Piner of Wake Early College of Health and Sciences, Elizabeth Shaver of Holly Springs and Laurie Toreson of Panther Creek.

The semifinalists will be recognized at the March 1 school board meeting. The group will be whittled down to 13 finalists who will be announced in early April. The new Teacher of the Year will be named May 11.
