The Wake County school system announced Tuesday its finalists for 2016-17 Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year.
The Principal of the Year finalists are Kendra Culberson of Herbert Akins Elementary in Fuquay-Varina, Camille Miller of Willow Springs Elementary, Muriel Summers of Combs Elementary in Raleigh, Christopher McCabe of Heritage Middle in Wake Forest and Anthony Muttillo of Leesville Road High in Raleigh.
The Assistant Principal of the Year finalists are Jennifer Carfano of Herbert Akins Elementary in Fuquay-Varina, Melissa McKinley of Fox Road Elementary in Raleigh, Mary Taylor of Brooks Elementary in Raleigh, Cheryl Munn of Reedy Creek Middle in Cary and Melissa Thomas of Wakefield High in Raleigh.
“There is far more to leading a school and doing it well than most realize,” Superintendent Jim Merrill said in a written statement. “A solid school leader doesn’t just oversee good learning and teaching. He or she also ensures that all aspects of a school’s operations are functioning smoothly while maintaining positive relationships with parents and the community.
“These finalists do it all, and we applaud them.”
Candidates were nominated by their peers. Those with the most votes on the ballots became finalists.
Teams will review the finalists, and winners will be announced Oct. 5.
