A team of five local middle school students earned a spot in the First Lego League’s international tournament after successfully competing at the regional and state level.
The team includes Hayden Young and Jack Weilding, sixth-graders at at Exploris Middle School in Raleigh; Victoria Williams, a seventh-grader at East Cary Middle School; Joy Young, a seventh-grader at Martin Middle School in Raleigh; and James Stewart, an eighth-grader who attends homeschool.
The First Lego League presents a science and technology challenge in which teams research and design their own solution to a current scientific problem and build an autonomous LEGO robot that performs a series of missions.
The local students came together under the name LunaTechs and placed first at a November regional First Lego League competition in Winterville.

In January the team competed against 60 other teams at the state competition held at N.C. Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro.
LunaTechs won the second place Champions Award and an invitation to the Razorback International Competition in Fayetteville, Ark. in May. The team is raising $5,000 to fund the trip. Donations can be be made by visiting LunaTechs.weebly.com.
