At the beginning of the school year, Dr. Shana Barr, music teacher at Lincoln Heights Elementary School in Fuquay-Varina, gave her fifth grade students a challenge to learn the National Anthem. It is notorious for being a song that is not easy for a professional singer to sing, let alone a fifth grade student, but the students accepted the challenge. With practice and determination their goal was achieved, and to their surprise, well-received.
Upon having their National Anthem video performance sent to several local colleges and universities, the students were invited by UNC-Chapel Hill to sing at a UNC Women’s basketball game. With the love and support of many teachers, community organizations, and local businesses, the students traveled to Chapel Hill where they enjoyed touring the UNC campus and performing at the game. They sat in the UNC student section where they were treated to a pizza lunch and pom-poms to cheer the Tar Heels.
