The Wake County school system is officially neutral on the county board of commission races, but campaign donations clearly show where people’s sympathies lie in terms of next week’s election results.
As noted in today’s article, the four Democratic candidates for the Wake County Board of Commissioners have significantly outraised their incumbent Republican opponents. That same advantage is apparent when you look at the donations that the Democratic candidates have gone from current and former Wake County school board members and administrators.
Most of the school board donations are for fairly small amounts.
In terms of current office holders, school board member Keith Sutton gave $25 to Democrat Matt Calabria. Democrat Jessica Holmes got $100 from the campaign committee of school board member Jim Martin, $50 from the campaign committee of school board member Zora Felton and $25 from the campaign committee of school board member Monika Johnson-Hostler.
School board Chairwoman Christine Kushner gave indirect support via a trio of $1,000 donations from her husband, David, to Calabria, Holmes and Democrat Sig Hutchinson.
Several past school board members gave donations with the most money coming from Tom Oxholm, who gave $2,500 to the four Democratic candidates. Other former school board members who donated to Democratic commission candidates this cycle include Roxie Cash, Beverley Clark, John Gilbert, Rosa Gill, Susan Parry and Wray Stephens.
The lone donation from a former school board member to a Republican commission candidate reported so far was $500 from Henry Knight to Joe Bryan.
Among the former school employees who gave money to Democrats was former Superintendent Del Burns, who gave $100 to Hutchinson.
