The Wake County school board voted Tuesday to pay $2.1 million for 49.59 acres in East Raleigh for a new elementary school and middle school.
The board agreed to purchase 45 acres on Poole Road near Barwell Road – with a street address of 6120 Poole Road. The board also agreed to buy 4.59 adjoining acres on Barwell Road – with a street address of 1920 Barwell Road.
The school system plans to combine both parcels for as many as two schools. The elementary school, identified as E-28, is scheduled to open in 2017. The middle school, which is less than three miles from Barwell Road Elementary School, would be built at a later date.
The school system has been purchasing more sites in East Raleigh in recent years because of the growth in that part of the city. The $42,500 per acre price is also much less than what Wake has paid for new sites in the western part of the county.
Never miss a local story.
The purchase still needs to be approved by the Wake County Board of Commissioners, which is switching to a Democratic majority that’s more friendly to the school board.
