A vocal critic of the old controlled-choice student assignment plan has been appointed to serve on a Wake County school board advisory council.

The school board approved Tuesday the appointment of Maria Reier to school board member Zora Felton’s District 7 advisory council. Reier, a Cary mother of students at Carpenter Elementary and Davis Drive Middle, had been an outspoken critic of the choice plan.

Reier had organized protests at the school system’s headquarters. She contended that the school system was not transparent with how the choice plan was implemented.

Reier is one of three District 7 board advisory council members appointed Tuesday night. The BAC members serve at the pleasure of school board members and a shakeup is on the way in District 7 because Felton ousted incumbent Deborah Prickett in October.
