UPDATE: Wake County tweeted at 12:40 p.m. that the district is “on schedule” for Saturday’s makeup day.

Thousands of Wake County year-round students are waiting for word from the school system if they’ll have to go to school Saturday, Feb. 15, for a planned makeup day.

If Wake emulates Chatham County, the answer would be no. In announcing that schools will be closed Friday, Chatham said on its website that “Saturday, February 15th will not be an option for make-up due to the uncertainty regarding icy conditions overnight.”

In response to a tweet Friday morning about the status of Saturday’s makeup day, Wake responded that “Main roads are looking much better; neighborhoods, not so much. Warmer temps & sunshine should make a big difference.”

On Thursday, a person tweeted a plea not to add more Saturday makeup days for year-round students. They could face as many as seven Saturdays now.

“Can we petition the powers that be to add minutes instead of days? Poor year round folks will never have another weekend,” she tweeted.

“We can do either/or (days or hours) and will pick whichever one works best for our parents. Right now, we're opting for hours,” Wake tweeted back.
