More details to come later, but the Wake County school system announced Thursday that its new partnership with the music industry is coming via Usher.

Wake is working with Usher’s New Look Foundation to launch the “Music Moguls” program, which will give middle school students and high school students the chance to learn about the business side of the music industry. It’s part of New Look’s focus on providing leadership training to young people.

“One of the nice pieces about it is that automatically you have the Usher name,” said Marlo Gaddis, Wake’s director of instructional technology and media services. “Every time I mention that, people are like ‘I’d like to be part of that, please,’"

Gaddis said Wake is one of five districts nationally, and the only one in North Carolina, to be in the new program. Wake is the state’s largest school district with 153,000 students.

School board members joked there won’t be a problem finding students who want to sign up.

But initially it will be piloted in two Wake middle schools, six high schools, an alternative school and one of the single-sex leadership academies. It’s going to be a career and technical education course with the first one being “Music Industry Leadership 101.” in the spring of 2015.
