Tony Tata not going on Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Inter-City visit

Former Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata would have gone on the same trip as two school board members who had voted to fire him in 2012.

There won’t be that awkward moment during the upcoming Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Inter-City Visit in which former Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata would have been in the same room with school board members Christine Kushner and Jim Martin.

Organizers said Tata canceled Wednesday his participation in the visit to Indianapolis. More than 100 elected officials, government officials, business leaders and community leaders are making the trip.

One of the topics that will be covered is transportation, something that goes along with Tata’s new job as state Transportation Secretary.

During his tenure as superintendent, Tata had run-ins with Kushner and Martin. In September 2012, both Democratic board members had voted to fire Tata in a 5-4 vote that went along partisan lines.

Organizers said Tata was paying for the trip out of his own pocket. Kushner, Martin and Wake Superintendent Jim Merrill are having their costs covered by the chamber.
