Ken O’Connor, who calls himself “ The Grade Doctor,” will be the guest at tonight’s forum sponsored by the Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African American Children that calls on the Wake County school system to ban zero grades.
O’Connor will participate via Skype at Part 2 of the CCCAAC’s “Say Yes! To No More Zeros!!” forum. The group has urged Wake to continue following the principles of O’Connor that were begun in 2008 when principals and teachers throughout the district were asked to read his book “ A Repair Kit for Grading: 15 Fixes for Broken Grades.”
O’Connor doesn’t believe that “student behavior” should be included in grades. That means not giving zeros for missing work and not reducing the grade for work that’s handed in late or for cheating.
O’Connor says that students who commit “academic dishonesty” should be required to redo the test, Instead of punishing the student by lowering the grade, he says schools should “apply other consequences.”
In the meantime, the Wake County school board is working through new grading policy guidelines that would leave it up to each schools to develop its own plan for dealing with things like late and missing work and retestijng of students who are in danger of failing.
