Women's data breach probed

A security breach involving patient data in a UNC-Chapel Hill medical school computer server has prompted an investigation by the state Attorney General's Office.

By Tuesday, the consumer division of Attorney General Roy Cooper's office had received 25 calls from women whose personal data had been submitted to a UNC-CH mammography study. University officials recently discovered a hacker had infiltrated one of the study's computer servers.

Many women learned of their participation in the study when UNC-CH sent them letters detailing the breach.

UNC-CH wants vigilance

In a never-ending battle against hackers, the head of information technology at UNC-Chapel Hill has a message for campus workers: take ownership of your computer.

That's a core theme of a new policy that Vice Chancellor Larry Conrad is trumpeting on a campus where 80,000 computers and other electronic devices tap into the campus network.

Though the policy won't solve all of UNC-CH's network security problems, Conrad points to one piece of his proposal as an example of its larger philosophy: Employees with computers must keep their virus software and security patches up to date, just as they would for their personal computers.

Hackers hit colleges to get personal data

Patrons of the state's community colleges may have had their driver's license and Social Security numbers stolen by a hacker.

College officials said Tuesday that they were notifying nearly 51,000 library users at 25 campuses, including Wake Tech and Johnston County, that they were victims of a security breach this year.

Officials said they discovered in August that a hacker had gained access to a Raleigh server, which holds information that can be used to steal identities. The breach has been under investigation since.

Hacker hits UNC-CH study data

A hacker has infiltrated a computer server housing the personal data of 236,000 women enrolled in a UNC-Chapel Hill research study.

Among the information exposed: the Social Security numbers of 163,000 study participants.

Though the intrusion was detected in late July, computer forensics experts say it may have happened two years ago, said Matthew Mauro, chairman of the UNC-CH Department of Radiology.

Wake Radiology out of UNC-CH Mammography study

Wake Radiology has suspended its relationship with the UNC Chapel Hill medical school study whose computer server was recently hacked, exposing personal data including social security numbers of more than 100,000 patients.

The practice will only participate again if all data is anonymous and unidentified, a spokeswoman said today. (Read a statement from the practice at the bottom of this blog post)
