close xIt was hard enough for James Gumpper to navigate a narrow course with a state trooper as a passenger. And when his phone lit up with a message from a friend, Gumpper lost control of the golf cart. Gumpper, 14, was one of about 35 Enloe High School students who got a hands-on lesson Thursday at the Raleigh school on the hazards of texting while driving. Troopers have taken their obstacle course to 13 high schools across the state. North Carolina law bans all cell phone use for drivers under 18, and a law to take effect Dec. 1 will make it illegal for anyone to read e-mail or send text messages while driving.
