Eagle Scout rank
A Leesville High School sophomore has attained the Eagle Scout rank, the highest in Boy Scouting.
Andrew Tibbetts of Raleigh did his service project for the pediatric oncology wing at the N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill.
He led a group of 38 young people and 14 adults who collected personal items and small toys, then put them into 300 "Be Prepared Bags" for distribution to newly admitted cancer patients. Tibbetts' project encompassed more than 385 hours of planning and labor over six months.
Tibbetts has served as a den chief, instructor, patrol leader and librarian of Troop 352 in Raleigh. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow and received the Medal of Merit in 2006 for first aid given to his father during an accident.
He volunteers for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, Victory Junction Gang Camp and the V Foundation to help promote awareness of pediatric cancers.
He is the son of Larry and Elizabeth Tibbetts.
Three win scholarships
from construction group
The Raleigh Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction awarded three scholarships at its annual recognition night at the N.C. State University Club.
The winners are Joseph W. Montjoy, an engineering and management major at N.C. State; and two Wake Technical Community College students: Carol Milla, an architecture major; and Heather Langdon, an interior design major. The scholarships are awarded to undergraduates who are pursuing construction-related studies.
Raleigh Girl Scout
wins Silver Award
Crystan Symone McLymore of Raleigh has won the second-highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Silver Award.
The award symbolizes outstanding accomplishment and a commitment to excellence. For her Silver Award project, McLymore presented an anti-smoking workshop for young people at the Tarboro Community Center in Raleigh.
"I shared the harmful effects smoking could have on their health, both present and future," she said. "I talked about making healthy decisions about their bodies now so they will not have to deal with the adverse effects from smoking and second-hand smoke in the future."
McLymore, a 10th-grader at Millbrook High School, is the daughter of Crystal Wright. She belongs to Girl Scout Troop No. 63, advised by her mother and Sandy Lee.
Faison receives multimedia fellowship
Heather Ashley Faison, daughter of Mary and Lawrence Jordan of Raleigh, is the recipient of the Kiplinger Multimedia Fellowship at Ohio State University.
Faison's fellowship will begin in January.
She is a 2003 graduate of Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh and a 2007 graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Faison is a writer and copy editor for the Philadelphia Tribune.
