RALEIGH -- A Raleigh man pleaded guilty in Wake County Superior Court on Friday to second-degree murder for an automobile collision in July 2008 that ended the life of Lillian "Lilli" Broox Manis of Chapel Hill.

Justin Caleb Crouse, 20, of 4612 Limerick Drive, was sentenced to at least seven years and 10 months in prison for the July 12, 2008, collision.

Manis, 17, was a recent Chapel Hill High School graduate who planned to go to Earlham College in Indiana and focus on Asian studies and art.

She was riding in a Honda with her boyfriend, Philip Jurov of Durham, when the Ford driven by Crouse ran a red light on Lynn Road at Glenwood Avenue shortly before 5 a.m.

Jurov sustained serious injuries. Manis was pronounced dead at WakeMed Raleigh Campus.

Crouse pleaded guilty to felony assault with a deadly weapon for the injuries to Jurov.

After his time in prison, where he will be treated for substance abuse, Crouse must do 300 hours of community service and counsel young people about the dangers of alcohol.

The Manis family has filed a civil suit against Crouse with the hope of recovering money for Jurov's continuing medical costs.
