Six people went to hospitals today after exposure to an unknown material at a Knightdale McDonald's.

The McDonald's at 7141 Knightdale Blvd. was evacuated shortly after 10 Sunday morning.

Thirty-one people, including customers and employees, were treated by emergency medical personnel for complaints such as burning noses and eyes, said Jeffrey Hammerstein, district chief for Wake County EMS. Six people were taken to hospitals for further evaluation.

The hazardous materials team from the Raleigh Fire Department responded to the call, along with Knightdale police and firefighters, and EMS personnel from Wake and Eastern Wake.

So far, no cause has been discovered, Hammerstein said, but Knightdale police are continuing to investigate.
