SUV driver dies in collision with train

A train traveling through Morrisville collided with a vehicle Sunday afternoon, killing the driver.

Morrisville police said the SUV's driver, a 53-year-old man, was the only person killed.

The man was driving on Barbee Road around 2:30 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train traveling west from Raleigh to Linwood.

Train near Fayetteville hits pickup and driver dies

One person was killed when an Amtrak passenger train hit a truck at the River Road crossing Friday afternoon.

Firefighters and state troopers said the driver of a Toyota Tundra pickup was killed. The driver's identity was not disclosed.

The crossing, east of the Cape Fear River and north of U.S. 301, has gates and flashing red lights that were activated at the time of the collision, according to Amtrak.

Man dies in train-car collision

A 60-year-old Cary man was killed Tuesday morning when the car he was driving was struck by an Amtrak passenger train near the intersection of Royal and Hillsborough streets.

Jack Milton Daniels was driving a 2002 Toyota north on Royal Street when he went around lowered gates and stopped in the middle of a train crossing, according to a Raleigh police report. The approaching train's lights also were flashing, according to the police report.

The eastbound train struck Daniels' car at 10:58 a.m. and pushed it 75 feet. The train came to a stop 829 feet from the site of the impact.

Amtrak train hits abandoned car

A car left abandoned on railroad tracks near Aviation Parkway and Morrisville Carpenter Road was hit by an Amtrak train carrying passengers Wednesday night.

The driver of the vehicle had gone to get help after the vehicle became stuck on the tracks, said Morrisville police Capt. David Ng.

No one on the train was injured.

Two children killed in train, SUV collision in Durham

State officials have been trying secure funding to build a railroad overpass or an underpass at the intersection where two children were killed and a woman injured Wednesday when their Ford Explorer was hit by an Amtrak train.

A westbound Amtrak passenger train struck the SUV at 5:19 p.m. near the intersection of Ellis Road and Angier Avenue, a rail crossing with a history of accidents. Durham police said the vehicle was sitting on the train tracks, apparently blocked by traffic, when the train warning arms came down.

The impact threw a 9-year-old boy and 6-year-old boy from the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver of the vehicle was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. Police have not released their identities.
