FROM STAFF REPORTS

FAYETTEVILLE -- Shaniya Davis was laid to rest Sunday afternoon at a service that drew about 2,000 people at Manna Church in Fayetteville.

Her father, Bradley Lockhart, spoke at the service, asking mourners not to be angry, but to reach out to one another. Photos of Shaniya scrolled on a video screen.

Shaniya, 5, disappeared from her home in Fayetteville on Nov. 10; her body was found more than a week later in a patch of kudzu south of Sanford. She had been raped and strangled, according to police.

Her mother, Antoinette Davis, is charged with child abuse involving prostitution in her disappearance. Mario McNeill of Fayetteville is charged with kidnapping and murder in her death.
