Raleigh woman who was shot had feared husband

Less than 10 minutes before she was shot, a Raleigh woman said in a phone call that her husband was trying to kill her, according to documents made public Thursday.

Crystal Cooper, who was shot in the abdomen March 12, remains at WakeMed. A spokeswoman declined to release her condition.

Cooper's husband, Anthony Lee Cooper, 32, is in the Wake County jail on charges of attempted murder, assault and communicating threats.

2 children hurt when bus hits car

A school bus carrying 22 children collided with a sedan about 4 p.m. Friday, sending two children to the hospital.

The children were taken to WakeMed, said Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue. None of the injuries was thought to be serious.

The school bus carrying students from the Torchlight Academy struck a beige Mercedes while turning near the intersection of Raleigh Boulevard and Rock Quarry Road.

Deer puts woman in hospital

The buck darted across the road in morning darkness, straight into the path of Kristina Olive's car.

What followed sent Olive to the hospital after spending hours trapped in her car, waiting for someone to find her.

The deer crashed through her windshield, tangling its antlers in the car's air bag. The 27-year-old newspaper carrier lost control of her Chevy Lumina and swerved off the road and down an embankment, hitting three trees.

Mother charged in death of boy

A mother who detectives say beat her adopted children with plastic plumbing pipe is being charged with murder in the death of her 4-year-old son.

Lynn Marie Paddock, 45, was being held in the Johnston County jail without bail Sunday night. Johnston County Sheriff's deputies arrested her Sunday night after her 8-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son told social workers they'd been punished with a length of PVC pipe. Deputies and social service workers found severe bruising on the two children's bodies, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said.

The 4-year-old, Sean Paddock, was found lifeless in bed Sunday morning. He, too, was bruised from apparent beatings, Bizzell said. Detectives sent Sean's body to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

Man who killed children "unbalanced"

The estranged wife of a man who apparently killed their two children and himself on Monday told an emergency dispatcher that her husband was "unbalanced" after she spotted his car at her home.

Authorities who responded to Dawn Henry's call found the bodies of Steven Henry, 35, their daughter, Ashley, 6, and their son, Gregory, 4, in the vehicle.

In an affidavit for a search warrant, Detective Ryan Benson said Henry appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head. The children were covered by a red sheet, according to Benson's affidavit.
