Family and friends will gather in a Butner church this afternoon for memorial service for Kelly Currin Morris, a slain Granville County woman who had been missing for more than 14 months.
Morris, a Granville County 28-year-old mother of two, was last seen Sept. 3, 2008. Her family searched for her, or her body, for 14 months until her remains were found Nov. 17 in a 900-acre tract where dogs chase coyotes and foxes for sport.
Morris' husband, William Scott Morris, 35, is now in jail, charged with first-degree murder the same day his wife's remains were discovered.
Suspicion circulated around William Morris almost immediately. The day after Kelly Morris went missing, firefighters arrived at the couple's home outside of the small community and found it ablaze. William Morris was also charged with setting that fire.
Kelly Morris had two children, Taylor, 8, by a previous relationship, and Haley, 6. Both live with her father, Pat Currin.
The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at Bible Baptist Church, 2047 Gate Number 2 Rad. in Butner.
A fund to benefit Morris' children has been set up. Checks made out to "Fund for Kelly's Kids" can be mailed to Edwards Jones Investments, P.O. Box 806, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
