Two major storms were expected to hit the U.S. on Friday, including one that could bury the Mid-Atlantic under more than a foot of snow.

Heavy snow and rain that could cause serious flooding were expected in the Southeast, while southern parts of the Northeast could see 12 inches of snow or more. New York City was expected to receive about 6 to 8 inches of snow.

Snow was expected to begin falling early Friday afternoon across Washington and Baltimore, and create an unpleasant commute. But the bulk of the snow was expected to fall Friday night and Saturday morning.

Winter weather expected in the Triangle

The first winter storm of the season is expected to arrive in the Triangle on Friday afternoon, but whether you see snow, sleet or a cold rain will depend on where you live, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Wake and Franklin counties and points north and west, but not for Johnston, Harnett or Nash counties. As it looks now, the storm will arrive shortly after noon Friday, with rain, sleet and perhaps freezing rain and snow.

“We’re not going to see a lot of change in temperatures, not going to see warm air come in,” said Brandon Locklear, a meteorologist at the weather service office in Raleigh. “We’re going to stay on the cool side, 32 or 33, right along that freezing mark.”
