CARRBORO -- A clogged dryer exhaust tube was to blame for a fire that destroyed a family's laundry room and spread smoke damage throughout their apartment.

Firefighters from Carrboro and Chapel Hill responded to a small apartment complex at 107 Eugene St. about 8 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call from a neighbor who heard a smoke detector inside the apartment.

The tenant had left the dryer running, and neither she nor her daughter were home at the time of the fire. Deputy Fire Chief Trey Mayo said the pair had to stay elsewhere Thursday night until the smoke residue could be cleaned up. The American Red Cross assisted.

Mayo advised residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms. The Carrboro Fire Department will install them for free.

He also advised residents to clean out their dryer exhaust tubes once a year by removing them from the back of the dryer, propping open the flap on the exterior of the dwelling, and vacuuming out the tube from the inside.
