CHAPEL HILL - The UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees on Wednesday rejected the design concept for the first building at the Carolina North campus.

Several board members said they didn't feel the proposed Innovation Center design was exciting enough for the campus' main entrance off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

"It deserves a very special, attractive building," said board Chairman Roger Perry, a Chapel Hill developer.

The Innovation Center will be 85,000 square feet of lab and office space designed to boost university research into the private sector. It will be built and operated by a private company, Alexandria Real Estate Equities.

It's planned as the first building in Carolina North, the university's research and multi-use campus north of downtown.

The board asked the designers to bring back a revision, and Perry said that to expedite the project, members might meet by phone to approve it.
