HILLSBOROUGH -- A third grass-roots group has formed to fight a possible airport coming to rural Orange County.

NANO -- No Airport in Northern Orange -- opposes an airport site suggested by state Rep. Bill Faison off Coleman Loop Road north of Hillsborough.

A new airport authority will search for airport sites next year to replace Horace Williams Airport in Chapel Hill. UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp repeated last week that the university needs to close its existing airport for the planned Carolina North research campus.

A 2005 consultant's report suggested a site in White Cross in southwest Orange County would be best, after RDU, for UNC's medical fleet. But Thorp and others say RDU is acceptable only as an interim location and that the airport authority will have to begin a new site search.
