HILLSBOROUGH -- Orange County commissioners are inviting the public to join them on tours of the OWASA sludge disposal site on N.C. 54 just west of Orange Grove Road, a site that is a finalist to become a new trash transfer station.

The board also is considering two other sites in the same vicinity along N.C. 54 west of Carrboro. The county staff could not arrange tours of those sites because the Dodson family, which owns one of them, refuses to sell, and the Howell family, which owns the other, did not want the public or the media to accompany the board on the tour. By law, any gathering of four or more board members must be open to the public.

The tours will take place at 1 p.m. Friday and at 10 am. Monday. The green gate to the property will be marked with an orange cone.

County Manager Laura Blackmon will make her site recommendation on Friday. The commissioners will vote on Blackmon's recommendation at their meeting at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11.
