Travelers between Durham and Chapel Hill can look forward to a smoother flow along a cramped stretch of U.S. 15-501, starting in August 2010.
But before that, they'll have to deal with nearly three years of construction on the highway, which carries about 45,000 cars and trucks each day.
The state Board of Transportation is expected today to give DLB Inc. of Hillsville, Va., an $18.8 million contract to widen the last remaining four-lane section of U.S. 15-501 between the two cities and to make other improvements.
Work could begin in October on the project to:
* Add a third lane in each direction on 1.2 miles of U.S. 15-501 between Mount Moriah and Garrett roads.
* Put longer, higher bridges on that section of the highway to accommodate horseback riders and other users of a trail on New Hope Creek.
* Add a fourth lane to the exit ramp from westbound Interstate 40 for drivers turning left onto U.S. 15-501.
* Replace two bridges on Garrett Road between U.S. 15-501 and University Drive.
* Lengthen a turn lane to make more room for southbound cars on U.S. 15-501 turning left onto Garrett Road.
