CARRBORO - The Board of Aldermen approved a building permit Tuesday night for The Alberta, a four-story building planned downtown.

Plans for the project include space for shops, offices and restaurants on about half of the ground floor.

The top three floors and the rest of the ground floor will have condominiums.

Developers of the project agreed to conditions set by the aldermen last week, such as making part of The Alberta's driveway a public right-of-way and making three of the units affordable.

Currently, a satellite parking lot for tenants, employees and customers of Carr Mill Mall sits at the 100 Sweetbay Place-300 Roberson St. property, behind the Armadillo Grill.

When the new building is complete, the new parking lot will still serve that purpose, and tenants of The Alberta will park there.
