CARRBORO -- An electrical short caused a fire in an apartment building Sunday night that displaced 12 residents for the night.
The fire started in the kitchen before 9:15 p.m. in unit G-5 at the Berkshire Manor apartments at 112 N.C. 54 Bypass, according to Deputy Fire Chief Trey Mayo.
No one was home at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Seventeen firefighters from three fire departments got the fire under control within 10 minutes, he said. But smoke and water damage affected three surrounding units, and 12 people spent the night in area hotels, Mayo said.
Residents from two of the units will likely be allowed to return to their apartments. The apartment where the fire started, however, was not inhabitable, and the unit below it also was heavily damaged by water, he said.
The fire caused an estimated $65,000 in damage, Mayo said.
