CHAPEL HILL -- Downtown Chapel Hill may be getting a farmers' market.
The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership is working with local farmers and the town's Parks and Recreation Department to establish an afternoon market on top of the Wallace Parking Deck this spring.
A downtown market would support the growing demand for locally grown and produced food, organizers said in a release Friday. It would support the partnership's goal of bringing people downtown and the town's goal of championing the downtown.
The proposed Chapel Hill market would be modeled on farmers' markets in Carrboro, Hillsborough and Fearrington Village.
The parking deck, on East Rosemary Street, is an underused space, town officials have said. It has ample room for vendors, an amphitheater for entertainment, and parking below. Visitors could walk from downtown, campus and local neighborhoods, take a bus, or drive and park in the deck.
The proposed market would sell fresh produce, flowers, meats, cheeses and other dairy products, plants, herbs, and baked and preserved goods, organizers said. It also could feature live music and entertainment. Downtown businesses and restaurants would have opportunities to sell their products and food.
