Businesses reopen after lockouts

CHAPEL HILL - Franklin Street coffee shop 3Cups reopened Tuesday, two days after its landlord changed the locks in a dispute over rent.

Neighboring eatery Sandwhich, whose employees also had been locked out, also reopened, according to a post on its Web site.

The two businesses were locked out Sunday by landlord Spencer Young. Letters from Young and his attorney posted on the door said 3Cups was behind in its rent.

Coffee shop owner Lex Alexander said he had been paying his rent into an escrow account because a dispute between Young and parking lot owner P.H. Craig had deprived his customers of parking.
