Orange County Rep. Verla Insko secured a 10th term Tuesday in the state House of Representatives after defeating her Republican challenger in the District 56 race.
Insko received 82 percent of the vote with 26 of 28 precincts reporting. Her challenger, David (Dave) Pratt Carter, had 18 percent.
Insko, 78, lives in Chapel Hill and is a retired health program administrator. She has served Orange County in the state House since 1997, including as a member of the Joint Legislative Mental Health Oversight Committee and the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee.
Insko has served locally with the Orange County Partnership for Young Children and the former Orange County Center for Women, and also was a member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board, Orange County Board of Commissioners and the Orange Water and Sewer Authority board of directors.
