Ellmers’ remarks about women stirs criticism

U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers has found herself in a whirlwind of criticism after The Washington Examiner on Sunday quoted her at a meeting of women held by the U.S. House’s conservative caucus.

U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers has found herself in a whirlwind of criticism after The Washington Examiner on Sunday quoted her saying:

“We need our male colleagues to understand that if you bring it down to a woman’s level and what everything that she is balancing in her life – that’s the way to go.”

Ellmers was talking a meeting of women held by the U.S. House’s conservative caucus.

Examiner columnist Ashe Schow on Tuesday wrote that Ellmers accused her of lifting the quote out of context, and being a “liberal woman reporter.” Schow, who previously worked as an editor and writer at the conservative Heritage Foundation, then posted online the entire transcript and an audio clip.

At the meeting, Ellmers spoke at length about the challenge of women making themselves heard. She made several points about women being at a disadvantage sometimes.

She also said this, according to the transcript:

“Men do tend to talk about things on a much higher level. You know, one of the things that has always been one of my frustrations and I speak about this all the time – many of my male colleagues, when they go to the House floor, you know, they’ve got some pie chart or graph behind them and they’re talking about trillions of dollars and, you know, how the debt is awful and, you know, we all agree with that.”

Ellmers issued a statement saying she found it “both offensive and sexist to take my words and redefine them to imply that women need to be addressed at a lower level.” Ellmers also tweeted a link to the Examiner transcript, which you can read for yourself here:
