Clay Aiken’s last campaign fundraising report was notable for a scarcity of Hollywood-connected donors.
That will change. The Democratic challenger running in the 2nd Congressional District has a fundraiser Tuesday in Los Angeles, the blog Frontiersla.com reports. Aiken rose to fame as an ‘American Idol’ contestant.
The invitation on Facebook lists Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete (he’s a former NFL quarterback, she was on “21 Jump Street”), among the event chairs, and Wilson Cruz (“My So-Called Life” and “Red Band Society”), Joely Fisher (“’Til Death”), Peter Paige (executive producer of “The Fosters”) and Olympic medalist Greg Louganis on the host committee.
Aiken joined the cast of the musical “Spamalot” for a run in 2008, so he has some Broadway connections, too. Three Tony-winning actresses, Betty Buckley (“Cats”), Christine Ebersole (“42nd Street”), and Beth Leavel (“The Drowsy Chaperone”) will perform at a fundraiser for Aiken Oct. 1 in Manhattan.
Leavel was born in Raleigh and went to Meredith. She and Aiken performed in a North Carolina Theater production of the musical last year.
Aiken is challenging two-term incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers of Dunn.
