A career State Bureau of Investigation agent was named Wednesday to run the N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement division in the state Department of Public Safety.
Bernard W. Collier II will become director of the division effective Thursday, according to an announcement by Public Safety Commissioner Gregory K. Baker.
The position of ALE director has been vacant since Baker was promoted in September. Baker had been ALE director since May.
Collier has most recently been running the SBI’s criminal intelligence unit and the state’s homeland security analysis center. He first went to work at the SBI in 1987 as an agent, and over the next 26 years has been a drug investigator, pilot, arson and crime scene agent, canine handler, technical agent and bomb squad commander.
“I am humbled by the opportunity and am looking forward to working with DPS as well as all state and local agencies,” Collier said in a news release the department issued.
ALE enforces state alcohol and drug laws.
