Mitch McConnell headlines Tillis fundraiser at lobbyist’s home

Thom Tillis is getting even more support from top Republican Party officials in Washington.

Senate leader Mitch McConnell is helping host a Tillis fundraiser this week in the nation’s capital, according to an invitation obtained by the Washington Examiner. McConnell’s PAC recently gave money to Tillis’ campaign, which also had Karl Rove host a series of fundraisers.

Other big GOP names on the invite: Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Mike Enzi of Wyoming. The breakfast fundraiser is Thursday at the home of Geoffrey Gray, a lobbyist who has represented a number of banking interests, including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the newspaper reported. The donation level is $500 to $1,000 and PACs are expected to give $2,500.

“McConnell's political action committee has donated to Tillis' campaign, but the appearance at the fundraiser of the Senate's top Republican is an important, visible stamp of approval for Tillis' candidacy,” the D.C. publication writes.

It’s also likely to give his rivals more ammunition as they paint him as a political insider.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky recently endorsed Tillis rival Greg Brannon in the race, a division national Democrats are highlighting this week.
