Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and former presidential candidate, is endorsing Republican Woody White in the 7th Congressional District GOP primary.

Huckabee, who hasn't said whether he will run for president in 2016, hosts a political commentary show on Fox News.

"(White) shares my optimism for the future of our great nation and he believes that balanced budgets, lower taxes and smaller government are a better plan for our future than catastrophic debt, tax hikes and intrusive power grabs like Obamacare,” Huckabee says in letter to Republican voters in the 7th District.

White, a Wilmington attorney, is facing a contentious primary against former state Sen. David Rouzer of Johnston County. Fayetteville veteran Chris Andrade is also in the primary race.

According to a news release from White's campaign, White first met Huckabee when introducing him to voters in eastern North Carolina in 2007. "Frankly, America is in dire need of strong leaders willing to upset the status-quo apple cart in Washington," Huckabee said. "Woody is that type of leader.”

Huckabee was Arkansas governor from 1996 to 2007. The 7th district includes much of southeastern North Carolina. The primary is May 6.
