Phil Berger Jr. has picked up an endorsement from a national political figure: Newt Gingrich.

The former speaker of the U.S. House and Republican presidential candidate in 2012 declared his favorite candidate in North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District Republican primary on Thursday.

“Phil Berger is exactly the kind of person we need in Washington right now to stand up to a federal government that is wasteful, out of control and often corrupt,” Gingrich said in a news release Berger’s campaign released.

“I am honored and grateful for Speaker Gingrich’s endorsement,” Berger said.

Berger, the district attorney in Rockingham County, is running in a crowded primary.
