Spring Lake Mayor Chris Rey on Tuesday filed to run for U.S. Senate in the Democratic primary.
Rey is a major in the Virginia National Guard, an adjunct professor of criminal justice and executive director of a Fayetteville health-care provider for uninsured people suffering from chronic conditions. He also has a law degree from William & Mary.
Rey is in his third term as mayor of the town of 13,000, which is nestled against Ft. Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
He is running against party favorite Deborah Ross of Raleigh and Durham businessman Kevin Griffin.
Former Judge Paul Wright of Wayne County and Larry Holmquist of Greensboro have filed to run against Burr in the Republican primary.
