The state Board of Elections on Friday chose a new chairman: newly appointed member Grant Whitney Jr.
Whitney was sworn in after a unanimous vote of the board.
The governor appointed Whitney to finish serving the term of Josh Howard, who resigned. The term ends in May 2017.
Whitney is a former chairman of the Mecklenburg County Republican Party. He was been a partner at Parker, Poe, Adams & Bernstein since 1979, where he handles commercial real estate and property transactions.
The board’s five members are appointed by the governor upon the recommendations of the state Republican and Democrat party leaders.
