The Wake County Democratic Party wants to help out with a gun raffle fundraiser held by its GOP counterpart.
The Wake County Republican Party is raffling off an AK-47, a sport rifle and a shotgun to “celebrate the Second Amendment.” Wake Democrats want to make sure the winners use their new weapons safely.
So Wake County Democratic Party chairman Brian Fitzsimmons sent three trigger locks to the Republicans Tuesday, asking GOP chairman John Bryant to provide them to the raffle winners.
“There certainly is plenty that we disagree on, but I continue to believe that there is just as much that we agree on,” Fitzsimmons wrote. “I trust that one of those things is proper gun safety.
Never miss a local story.
“We can save the debate about legislative gun control for another day, but in the meantime, I trust we can both acknowledge the dangers of ambivalence towards keeping guns safe in your home, no matter its intended use. Consider this nothing more than an olive branch towards that goal.”
Fitzsimmons says the GOP should report the donation as an in-kind contibution from him personally. That would mean a rare appearance by a Democratic Party chairman on Republican donor rolls.
