Gov. Pat McCrory has nominated his top lobbyist at the legislature to serve on a board that reviews appeals from people seeking unemployment benefits.
Fred Steen, a former legislator, plans to leave his current job in the McCrory administration on July 1 if the legislature confirms his appointment to the Division of Employment Security’s Board of Review. The House Rules Committee voted unanimously in Steen’s favor on Tuesday.
“He’s done a great job in our caucus and in the House,” said Rep. Paul Stam, an Apex Republican. “The Board of Review will do well by having him there.”
McCrory and the legislature sparred last year over who had authority to appoint Board of Review members, and they eventually reached an agreement that gave the power to the governor.
McCrory has not announced who will fill Steen’s current position.
