Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton arrived for her Tuesday speech in Charlotte in style, flying in with President Barack Obama aboard Air Force One.
Her Republican rival, however, took issue with the flight.
“Taxpayers are paying a fortune for the use of Air Force One on the campaign trail by President Obama and Crooked Hillary,” Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday, when he himself was later speaking in Raleigh. “A total disgrace!”
PolitiFact saw the tweet and decided to check whether taxpayers were really on the hook, or if Clinton’s campaign paid for all or part of the flight.
No matter the answer, the plane is not cheap to fly.
The White House has, since the 1970s, refused to say exactly how much it costs to operate Air Force One. But at least one recent estimate put the cost at more than $200,000 per hour.
But how much of the cost did taxpayers likely pick up? Read the full PolitiFact story to find out.
