DURHAM -- A Durham County grand jury indicted Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. on Monday for first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the cases connected to the slaying in January of a Duke University graduate student.
Lovette is one of two people charged with killing Abhijit Mahato, a graduate student from India found dead on Jan. 18 in his off-campus apartment. An autopsy report released last week shows that Mahato died from a single gunshot wound between the eyes. The medical examiner's report says the killer fired a gun through a pillow held tightly against Mahato's face.
Lovette also was one of two people charged by Chapel Hill police with first-degree murder in the killing of Eve Carson, the UNC-Chapel Hill student body president found fatally shot on March 5. The Chapel Hill charges were not brought before the Durham grand jury.
An indictment means a grand jury found enough evidence to proceed with charges.
