Profiles of candidates for governor will run this week

This week, The News & Observer will profile the eight candidate jockeying for the Democratic and Republican nominations for governor.

On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and State Treasurer Richard Moore are waging fierce campaigns. A third candidate, Dennis Nielsen, is waging a long-shot campaign for the Democratic nomination.

On the Republican side, four major candidates are vying for the nomination. They are Salisbury lawyer Bill Graham, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, former state Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr and state Sen. Fred Smith of Clayton. Elbie Powers, a Sampson County farmer and crop duster, is running a long-shot campaign for the GOP nomination.

Here's the order of candidates' profiles.

MONDAY: Bob Orr; TUESDAY: Bill Graham; WEDNESDAY: Fred Smith; THURSDAY: Pat McCrory; FRIDAY: Richard Moore; SATURDAY: Beverly Perdue; SUNDAY: Elbie Powers and Dennis Nielsen
