RALEIGH -- A Sanderson High School teacher has been charged with taking indecent liberties with a student.

School officials alerted police after learning of the allegation against the teacher, Shannon Lynn Best, 28, of 5937-A Shade Tree Lane. Best, who was hired in August 2004, resigned Monday, said Michael Evans, a spokesman for the county school system.

Police took Best into custody Monday, court records show.

Investigators think the offense took place at the teacher's home with an 18-year-old female over the weekend, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said. Although the student was legally of age, North Carolina law prohibits a sexual relationship between school personnel and students.

Best was released from the Wake County jail Monday after posting a $5,000 bond, a jail spokesperson said.
