CHARLOTTE - A bill to address gang violence is getting mixed reaction from some North Carolina legislative candidates.

Rep. Tricia Cotham told The Charlotte Observer it's needed to ensure Charlotte doesn't turn into a Los Angeles or Chicago. Her opponent in Tuesday's Democratic primary, Lloyd Scher, said the bill doesn't provide enough money.

The bill would define the meaning of "street gang" and make it illegal to join. Lawmakers are expected to consider the bill during the short legislative session that begins next week.
