RALEIGH -- Republicans also voted in the presidential primary Tuesday, and, as expected, they voted overwhelmingly for Sen. John McCain.

The Arizona senator locked up the delegate count last winter, leaving him relatively unscathed during the past two months as his Democratic rivals fought for the nomination.

Still, McCain visited the Tar Heel state Monday to remind voters that he, too, wanted support.

McCain recently supported a summer gas tax holiday to offset record prices. Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton also supports a tax holiday.

McCain has been endorsed by U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, a Winston-Salem Republican.

With 60 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, McCain had 74 percent of the vote among Republicans.

He was followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 12 percent, Ron Paul with 8 percent and Alan Keyes with 3 percent.

The remaining voters said they had no preference.
