The race among four Democrats to challenge incumbent Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry appears to be bound for overtime.
According to unofficial returns, no candidate appeared headed to the 40 percent margin of the vote need to avoid a runoff.
Berry ran unopposed in the GOP primary.
Mary Fant Donnan led the way in the Democratic primary with 28 percent of the vote after 91 percent of precincts reported. Donnan is a former research director at the state Department of Labor. She now works as a program officer for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem.
She was followed closely by Robin Anderson, a Raleigh labor and employment attorney; John Brooks of Raleigh, who served as a labor commissioner from 1977 to 1993; and Ty Richardson, a former Marine who lives in Middlesex. They were deadlocked at 24 percent each.
The top two candidates earn the right to move on to a runoff on June 24.
